"Between the last light on desert red rocks and the first light of the North Atlantic, two landscapes come together in this exhibition."
Two major series of my paintings bring the open spaces of the Southwest—almost abstract in form, with brilliant reds and oranges against clear blue skies—into conversation with the rocky shores of New England, their subtle color variations and cool waters. These places differ profoundly in color, atmosphere, and the feeling of standing before land and water.
In Arizona and Utah, red rocks rise against immense skies, holding the warmth of the day as shadows gather. Plein-air studies from travels through other Southwestern states broaden the journey. Across the country, along the coast of Maine, cold North Atlantic waters meet rugged granite cliffs. Lobster boats bring human life and presence to the harbors.
Atmosphere, clouds, and skies connect the two series. Both also explore a time of day especially close to my heart and familiar in my paintings: the arrival of night. Nocturnes bring these distant landscapes together beneath the quiet of darkening skies.
